Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV – Crazy Tech & Unbelievably Practical

The all new HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 was unveiled in December, but now it is launched in the Indian market in Auto Expo 2023 which was open to Business ticket holders on January 13 from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm, and to the general public from January 13-18 from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm.

It is Hyundai’s second offering in the EV Segment after KONA. Hyundai IONIQ 5’s design has been inspired by Hyundai’s first passenger vehicle – Hyundai PONY. The main rival to the IONIQ 5 is its sibling KIA EV6, which shares the same platform underneath but HYUNDAI still managed to cut 16 Lakhs on IONIQ 5.

The IONIQ 5 has an introductory price of 44.95 lakhs ex- showroom and would be offered in a single variant in INDIA and mainly rivals with VOLVO XC40 Recharge and BYD Atto 3.

When we talk about the styling and looks of the IONIQ 5, it has a very different design language as compared to the design language which we see on ICE HYUNDAI models (internal combustion engine). It has a very subtle design where the headlights and the front camera merge along and a HYUNDAI logo placed above on the frunk. The iconic front is defined by Parametric Pixel LED Headlamps that boast of a unique pixel signature, reflecting the design inspiration of Hyundai IONIQ 5. The Premium front LED accent lighting features transflective coating technology that lends the appearance of a garnish when the lamp is off. It also features an Active air flap (AAF) that improves aerodynamics when closed and cools vehicle parts when open.

When we come to the side, first we notice that it gets 20 inches diamond cut alloy wheels which are very beautiful in design and gets flush door handles, which improves the aerodynamics of the car. It gets a sloping roofline which merges with the C pillar aesthetically and gets a subtle spoiler at the rear. The design of the tail lamps also matches as the front one. Dual square shaped LED tail lamps with a very subtle line of light joining the both tail lamps underneath the LEDs, makes it look more appealing. But it does miss out on rear wiper and washer at this price point. The overall design of the vehicle is totally proportionate and appealing to the eyes.

When we step inside the cabin, first we experience masterful integration of technology and design that evokes a pleasant customer experience. IONIQ5 gets a premium seat upholstery that provides an upmarket experience to customers. It derives a fresh take on cabin space by maximizing emphasis on comfort and convenience. Designed and developed with a dedicated focus to enhance cabin usability, thereby ensuring it is not just a means of transportation but transforms mobility lifestyle. When we talk about the steering wheel, it does not get any HYUNDAI logo. In Fact it gets Morse codes, which defines H of HYUNDAI.

It gets a dual 12.3 inch screen where one is the speedometer  and other is the infotainment screen. When we come into the rear seat experience, the under-floor battery eliminates the center tunnel giving a flat floor that increases legroom and enhances the feeling of openness and roominess. Since the cabin is also in gray tone, there is a sense of roominess and the big panoramic sunroof also increases the sense of space inside the car.

The IONIQ 5 comes with a slew of features and technologies. This includes ADAS LEVEL 2, Vehicle to load Technology and many others. Talking about the safety features, it gets 6 airbags, virtual engine sound system, Electric parking brake (EPB),  All Four Disc Brakes, Multi collision-avoidance brake (MCB),  Power Child Lock. It gets a dual zone climate control, BOSE premium 8 speaker system, drive mode select and many more features.

The HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 comes with a 72.6 kWh high voltage battery pack with high density battery cells and compact battery pack construct. This offers a power of about 217 BHP and 350 Nm torque. A stupendous range of 631 Kms ( as per ARAI ). But in the real world it should return about 550-570 kms of range . Talking about the charging, it supports DC fast-charging (up to 350kW) and can juice up its battery from nought to 80 per cent in 18 minutes. Since a charger capable of this output is scarce in India. One can charge the Ioniq 5 from zero to 80 per cent in an hour using a 50kW DC fast-charger.

The HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 is an all rounder product with great technology, comfort and space which it offers. So it is a great competitive product launched by HYUNDAI where it competes with VOLVO XC40 RECHARGE and BYD ATTO 3 in this price segment.
