First, what is iMT?

The iMT or intelligent Manual Transmission is in the simplest of words a clutchless manual transmission. Yes, it indeed is a clutchless manual transmission as it continues to offer a 2 peddle system consisting of the brake and accelerator, along with a conventional manual gearbox.

The iMT sits somewhere between the AMT gearbox and the classic manual transmission. With the iMT gearbox, gears are changed seamlessly without the need of pressing the clutch paddles, through intelligent software and actuators that virtually press the clutch paddle, while you manually shift the gear.

Currently Hyundai Venue , Kia Sonet and Hyundai i20 are the  iMT Transmission cars in India .

How Reliable is iMT ?

The iMT is equipped with the same contents as a regular manual setup, with the only difference being the absence of a clutch. iMT system is sensible and indeed the software is intelligent. 

Is iMT better than AMT ?  

Automated Manual Transmission/AMT and intelligent Manual Transmission/iMT are both regular manual gearboxes. In an AMT the actuators and motors change gears and operate the clutch for you.
In iMT the software and actuators control the clutch while you have to manually shift gears.

The iMT majorly reduces the stress of driving in Indian traffic, as it eliminates the clutch operation. The gear change is as smooth as it is in any manual car with a clutch pedal.
